"Rethinking Infant Vision Care: A Better Start for Every Child"

by Dr. Jochen Kumm and Dr. Jan Rydfors

10:30-11:00AM

Most infant vision care today relies on the red reflex test, a basic flashlight exam done during well-baby visits. Unfortunately, this method often misses serious retinal conditions present at birth. As a result, about 8% of children are first diagnosed with irreversible vision loss when they start school—well past the window for effective treatment. Pr3vent offers a better solution: a safe, 5-minute retinal imaging exam performed within the first 6 weeks of life. The images are reviewed by top retina specialists and supported by a 99.9% sensitive AI system. This approach detects nearly all vision-threatening conditions, 97% of which are treatable when found early. Over 338,000 babies have safely undergone retinal imaging in clinical and research settings. While not yet covered by insurance, the exam is available at leading clinics like Stanford and Freyja for $400. Parents gain peace of mind, and babies gain the best chance for healthy vision and development. Dr. Jochen Kumm and Dr. Jan Rydfors will present this new standard of care—combining innovation with deep experience in newborn health.
